Darlene Read
Perkins
Nov 14, 1947 — Nov 12, 2018
Darlene Read Perkins, 70, of Knapp Avenue, Morehead, passed away Monday, November 12, 2018, at the U.K. Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Darlene, the daughter of the late Jesse and Leona (Denton) Read, was born in Nashville, Tennessee, November 14, 1947, and graduated from high school in Campbellsville, Kentucky. Early in her life, she worked as a legal secretary for McCurdy, Candler, & Harris in Atlanta, Georgia, and then the predecessor of Stites & Harbison, Louisville, Kentucky. Having earned her undergraduate and master's degrees in social work at Morehead State University, Darlene became a social worker for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, including supervisory positions in Rowan and Menifee counties. Between retirements, she worked at Legal Services of the Bluegrass assisting seniors with Medicare decisions. She was a member and elder of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Morehead since 1989. Darlene was a person who lived her life in service to other people and had an uncanny ability to make others feel special. She leaves behind many friends and family members who will miss her smile, her warmth, and her generosity. There are countless lives she made better by stepping in anywhere she saw help was needed, whether as a social worker with the state, a board member at the homeless shelter or on outreach committees at church providing for families in need at Thanksgiving or Christmas for children. A special passion were foster children for whom she often bought clothes out of her pocket. She was an extraordinary and loved mother, an exceedingly patient wife, a fierce friend, an advocate for anyone who needed it, and a beautiful, elegant, and sweet person. Darlene is survived by her husband of 28 years, David Perkins; her sister, Sandra Binkley (Alvin) of Midlothian, Texas; her daughters, Lynn Lind (Jason) of Walterboro, SC and Lee Mitchell of Tallahassee, FL; her stepsons, Chris Perkins (Erin) of Cincinnati, OH and Michael Perkins (Maithreyi) of State College, PA; seven grandchildren and step grandchildren; one great grandson; and several cousins and nephews. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, November 16, 2018, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, followed by a celebration of life at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Don Chase officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church Living Memorial Fund, 227 E.
