Danney Carl James, age 84, of Morehead, passed away peacefully Monday, September 14, 2026, at UK-St. Claire HealthCare in Morehead.
Born December 15, 1941, in Morehead, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Mit James and Maxine Lambert James Butcher. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three infant sisters who passed away at birth.
Danney is survived by two sons, Danney James (Julie) and Tom James (Cassie), all of Morehead; four grandchildren, Nicholas James, Kevin James, Haley James, and Nick Greene; a great-granddaughter, Adalynn Greene; and two expected great-grandchildren, due in November and January. Also surviving are his brother, Phillip James of Jeffersontown, Kentucky; two nieces; as well as extended family and friends.
A graduate of Rowan County High School, Danney continued his education at Morehead State University, where he earned his master’s degree and Rank I certification. While attending college, he worked at the University Lodge on Main Street in Morehead.
Danney began his career in education teaching in Lebanon, Ohio. During that time, he also drove a school bus and worked at a steel mill during the summer months. In the 1960s, he returned to Kentucky and taught eighth grade at Elliottville Elementary School for several years. He later began teaching at the Morehead Youth Development Center, where he spent many years and was eventually promoted to principal. He retired in 1997.
Danney enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time in the woods. He also enjoyed going to the movie theater and watching old movies at home. Danney especially cherished the time he spent on his Christy Creek farm.
He will be remembered and greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, September 17, 2026, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, with Chaplain Susan Williams officiating, Decon Adrian Nicks will offer the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Brown Cemetery.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. David Victor and Adrian Nicks.
Visitation will be from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, September 17, 2026, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, Kentucky.
