Connie Lou (George) McGhee, a teacher and educator who directed Morehead State University-s Head Start Program for over 15 years, died on Friday, December 31, 2010, in Morehead, Kentucky. Mrs. McGhee was 68. The cause was not immediately known, but believed to be related to ongoing medical issues. She was in good spirits for the holidays and enjoyed her last Christmas with her family. Mrs. McGhee was born in Columbus, Ohio, but raised in Carrollton, Ohio. She was the oldest of eight children born to Dr. Ray E. and Mrs. Eileen Nutt George. She graduated from Carrollton High School in 1960 as valedictorian of her class. She married Dr. Paul R. McGhee, formerly of Kensington, Ohio, in 1963 at First Presbyterian Church in Carrollton. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood education at Kent State University, after attending The Ohio State University on a prestigious DeFord scholarship. She obtained a Master-s in education from Morehead State University. Her 35-year teaching career focused on early childhood education, primarily in the communities of Morgantown, West Virginia, and Morehead, Kentucky. Her dedication to her students and their families was boundless, particularly evident with her 3 and 4 year-old students with Head Start. While living in Morgantown she was a volunteer and community leader who served as President of the Woodburn Elementary PTO for five years. In 1973 she was selected by the Morgantown Women-s Club as -Outstanding Young Woman,- and later served as President of that organization. In Morehead, she continued her volunteer efforts as a member of Faith Presbyterian Church, and through her commitment to Rowan County High School-s band and athletics. In addition to her husband Paul, of Morehead, and mother Margie Eileen Nutt George of Columbus, Ohio, she is survived by her son, Lt. Col. Michael C. McGhee and wife Marianne, of Leonardtown, Maryland; her son, Mark J. McGhee, Esq. and wife Rita, of Charleston, West Virginia; her daughter, Melissa E. Clay and husband Charles T., of Huntington, West Virginia; her brother, Ray George; sisters, Margie Deardourff, Kathie Johnston, Amie Reid, Julie George, Laurie Litt, and Nancie George; and four grandchildren, Curtis M. McGhee, Craig J. McGhee, Lilith M. McGhee, and Maura S. McGhee. Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 5, 2011, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead, Kentucky. A funeral service will be held at Northcutt & Son on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Kathy Riley officiating. Pallbearers will be Deryl Johnston, Tom Reid, Bill Johnston, Curtis McGhee, Ray George, and Charles Clay. A graveside ceremony will be held at the Westview Cemetery in Carrollton, Ohio, on Friday, January 7, 2011 at 2 p.m. Family and friends are encouraged to donate to the American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association in lieu of flowers. Visitation: Wednesday, January 5, 2011, 6-8 p.m. Funeral: Thursday, January 6, 2011, 1 p.m. Interment: Westview Cemetery, Carrollton, Ohio
