Clifford Barker, age 97, passed away peacefully at his home in Morehead on Friday, December 21, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 50 years, Mary Christine Barker, Professional Artist, in 2010. Clifford was the son of Russell Glenn Barker and Bessie Alice Ferguson Barker. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Curtis (Curley) Barker, Ollie Barker and Blanche Wheeler. He is survived by two children, Charlette Barker Schwalbert (Dale) of Morehead and Troy Ernest Barker (Vickie) of Tennessee; one sister, Pauline Barker Ramey; four grandchildren, Adam Schwalbert, Laura Barker, Ashley Herring, and Alicia Fryia; and one great grandson, Gunner Fox Herring. He also leaves behind his caregivers Jeanne Brennan, St. Claire Hospice and many friends. Cliff began working for the local newspaper at the age of fourteen as a type setter. He graduated from Morehead High School in 1939, where he excelled in basketball. He saved many lives during the 1939 flood in Morehead because of his swimming skills. He used this experience to encourage children the value of learning how to swim and organized opportunities for them to learn how. In 1941, Cliff joined the United States Army and served his country during World War II. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he lived in Pasadena, California, where he attended Pasadena City College and studied Electrical Engineering. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and Overseas Craftsmen Association. This provided many experiences which included working in Hollywood and overseas. Returning to Morehead in 1970, he contributed to the community with various projects, including Fountain Square. He and Christine were owners of Pine Grove Framing and Gallery of Fine Arts. He was a longtime competitor in the Kentucky Senior Games, winning many Gold Medals over the years. He was an active member of Morehead Men's Club, Morehead Art Guild and Rowan County Senior Citizens (Golden Agers). Visitation will take place from noon until 1 p.m. Saturday, December 29, 2018, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. A Celebration of Life will begin at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Jeff Fannin officiating. Interment will be at Brown Cemetery with full military honors by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Claire Hospice, 222 Medical Circle, Morehead, KY 40351
