Obituary

Clayton M. Perkins, 84, of Knapp Avenue, Morehead, KY passed away at his home on July 11, 2013. A son of the late Eddie Morton and Sarah Gregory Perkins of Clearfield, KY, Perk was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Perkins in 1919 and Virgie Perkins Jones in 2003 and one brother, James R. Perkins in 2013. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Fyrl Black Perkins and five sons - David C. (Darlene); Stephen D. (Vicki); Paul 'Joe' (Betty) all of Morehead; John P. (Sonya) Corvallis, OR.; and Dr. Robert 'Ben' (Ayna) Portland, OR; six grandchildren, Chris, Michael, Telina, Brandin, Chrissy Lynn and Ryan; two step grandchildren, Lynn and Lee; eight great grandchildren and six step grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Lenora Murphy and Myrtle Terrell of Morehead and Dessie Swim of Allen Park, MI; three brothers, William of Dayton, OH; Jesse of Wetumpka, AL; Robert of Morehead and one hell of a lot of friends. Perk served as part of the occupation army in Europe immediately after WW II and was later stationed at Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX where he was a dental lab tech trainee and then in Whittier AK. He attended MSU from 1949 - 1952 as a business and science major. Perk was a civic leader and businessman in the community for several decades having served two terms on Morehead City Council and eight years on the City/County Planning Commission that wrote the first zoning and subdivision ordinances in eastern Kentucky. He was a member and Chairman of the Morehead Utility Plant Board for eight years. He served twelve years as Chair of the Morehead/Rowan Co. Industrial Foundation and was heavily involved in the effort that brought Browning/Seal-Master to Morehead; helped attract an English firm that manufactured mine safety equipment; spearheaded the land acquisition where SRG Global is located; and sold to the County at his cost the property where the first National Guard Armory was located. In his later years, he was the City Building Inspector/Planner and ABC Officer. In his business life, he founded Rowan County Heating & Plumbing which later became Perk's Inc. and spun off the contracting part of the business to become Service of Morehead, Inc. with his brother Bob. He was a founding partner of E & P Company which owned the 'Bunny Wash' carwash where Morehead Fire Station #1 now stands and is the property owner of the Yamato's restaurant. Perk was a founding partner of Bald Eagle, Inc. which owns the dialysis clinic facility and the property where the community garden is near City Park. He was also involved in many other developments such as Pretty Valley subdivision in Clearfield, Rodburn subdivision above the park there and numerous others business ventures. He was a member of Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654 and El Hasa Shrine in Ashland. Mostly, Perk enjoyed gardening and being a 'Papaw.' Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2013, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Rev. Allan Hutchinson and Rev. Jesse Perkins officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Cemetery with full military honors by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Pallbearers will be gandsons Brandin, Ryan, Chris, and Michael and nephews Phillip Perkins and Mitch Terrell. Visitation is from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 1900 Richmond Road, Lexington KY 40502. Visitation: Saturday, July 13, 2013, from 4 p.m. - 9 p.m. Funeral: Sunday, July 14, 2013, at 2 p.m. Interment: Lee Cemetery
