Clarence Edward Claxon, age 86, of Vanceburg, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2011, at his residence. He was born December 24, 1924, in Lorado, West Virginia, and was the son of the late Alonzo and Sophrona Ruth Hall Claxon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Helen Saunders, Elizabeth Kennard, Dorothy Askins, Gladys Hoffman, and Katherine Bentley. Mr. Claxon is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ada Faye Blankenship Claxon, whom he married December 27, 1946; one son, Kenneth Claxon and wife Jackie of Vanceburg, Kentucky; one daughter, Shirley Cagle and husband Cary of Ft. Worth, Texas; four grandchildren, Kent Claxon, Roger King, Robbie King, and Rachelle King; and five great grandchildren, Rowdy King, Ryston King, Travis King, Tyler King, and Tiana King. Also surviving are two sisters, Georgia Litteral of Wurtland, Kentucky, and Dollie Bigelow of Rushsylvania, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Claxon was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired from the Vanceburg Post Office after 41 years as Postmaster. He was a member of the Vanceburg United Methodist Church, a member of Vanceburg Masonic Lodge, and was involved with Gideon-s International. For 14 years he sang gospel music at the Paint Valley Jamboree in Bainbridge, Ohio, and with the Golden Keys Quartet. He also sang with Eastern Sunrise Quartet from Portsmouth, Ohio, and enjoyed gardening, traveling, and spending time with his family. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, August 21, 2011, at the Vanceburg United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, August 22, 2011, at the church with Pastor Janis Barton and the Rev. Larry Puryear officiating. Burial will follow in Black Oak Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Clarence Claxon may be made to Vanceburg United Methodist Church, 111 Second Street, Vanceburg, KY 41179. Arrangements are under the direction of Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, Morehead, KY.
