Obituary

Chieko Sugawara Leon, age 77, of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Friday, July 22, 2011, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. Born July 17, 1934, in Iwate Ken, Japan, she was the daughter of the late Rikichi and Tuya Tateba Sugawara. Her husband of 37 years, Terry Gene Leon, preceded her in death on July 15, 2009. Mrs. Leon is survived by one daughter, Dr. Mary Phillips (Richard) of Morehead, Kentucky; one son, Robert Smith (Jerilyn) of Los Angeles, California; two stepchildren, Lauri Buell and Terry Leon, Jr., both of Ilion, New York; eight grandchildren, Jason Leon, Alex Leon, Brett Leon, Kara-Lee Andrea, Brittany Buell, Sara Phillips, Casey Phillips, and Amber Smith; and three great-grandchildren, Jaydon Leon, Noah Andrea and Tyler Andrea. Other survivors include brothers and sisters, all living in Japan, many nieces and nephews, other extended family, and her beloved dog, Mojo. In addition to being a homemaker, Mrs. Leon was an accomplished seamstress who also enjoyed crocheting. She had a great sense of humor, loved her family, and cherished the time she spent with her children and grandchildren. She was a beloved aunt to her nieces and nephews. At the request of Mrs. Leon, no services are planned. Inurnment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Frankfort, KY. Arrangements are under the direction of Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Claire Hospice, 222 Medical Circle, Morehead, KY 40351 or the American Lung Association, 1301 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20004 Visitation: o visitation.
