Charlie L. Jones, 81, of W Black Road, Clearfield, passed away Sunday, October 2, 2016, at his home after an extended illness. Born August 2, 1935, in Rowan County, he was the son of Mart and Lila Purnell Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his brothers and sisters. Charlie is survived by his wife of 58 years, Leona Black Jones, whom he wed December 7, 1957; one son, Tony Jones and wife Peggy of Morehead; one daughter, Patty Jones Conley and husband Neal of Clearfield; three cherished grandchildren; Blake Jones and wife Liz, Brittany Kegley and husband Ervin, and Hannah Conley; and five precious great grandchildren, Cadence Caskey, Calen Caskey, Sean Kidd, Khloe Kidd, and Stella Ann Jones. He also leaves behind extended family and many friends. Charlie was an Air Force veteran, retired professor of mathematics, and community leader. Following his graduation from Breckinridge Training School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1952 and served for four years. He attended technical schools in electronics countermeasures, airbourne radio repairman and radar navigaton repairman, and served as an Instructor in Electronics, Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Mississippi, from 1954 until 1956. During his military service, he also earned college credits from Perkinston Mississippi Junior College, Mississippi Southern College, and University of Mississippi, Biloxi Extension. He returned home and completed a bachelor's and a master's degree at Morehead State College (graduating with honors) and completed additional graduate work at Auburn University. Passionate about education, he experienced teaching at every level. He worked as a graduate teaching assistant in history while completing a master's degree, was a high school mathematics teacher in Iberia, Ohio, and a supervising teacher of mathematics at University Breckinridge School, and spent several summers at MSU with the Upward Bound Program designed for college-bound students. During most of his career, he served as Associate Professor of Mathematics at Morehead State University, served on or chaired numerous committees, was active in professional organizations and university and community service. Among numerous recognitions, he was the recipient of Rowan County Star Teacher Award, Kentucky Chamber of Commerce; Outstanding Young Educator, Rowan County, Kentucky Junior Chamber of Commerce; and Outstanding Faculty Member, University Breckinridge School. He was also active in community service as a member of the Kiwanis Club, Little League Baseball Coach, Key Club Sponsor, and American Legion. Charlie was also passionate about his work with the Boy Scouts of America for more than 20 years. He served as Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, and Explorer Post Advisor and spent innumerable hours involving members in challenging activities. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award and the District Award of Merit. Through the years, Charlie traveled with different groups on special expeditions, repelling, winter camping, and mountain climbing and gave numerous presentations on outdoor activities to various clubs and organizations. He was an avid reader and writer, a historian, and enjoyed playing tennis and gardening. Charlie was a student of the Bible and faithfully attended Slab Camp Christian Church. He will be lovingly remembered by all. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brother Herbie Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the McClain-Arnold Cemetery with full military honors presented by Morehead American Legion Post 126, who will also serve as pallbearers. Grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitation is 5 p.m. Tuesday, October 4, 2016, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead.
