Charles Mintzer
Herbert
Jun 21, 1928 — Sep 20, 2014
Charles Mintzer Herbert, 86, of Muses Mill, Kentucky, died peacefully at his home on September 20, 2014. He was born in New York City on June 21, 1928, to Charles M. Herbert, Sr. and Elise Roesel Herbert. Older brother to Roland and John, his fondest childhood memories were of his maternal grandmother, Elise Otto Roesel and playing with his dog, Panther, in the vast swampland playground now known as John F. Kennedy airport. Charles graduated from the University of Bridgeport with a degree in mathematics and physics and pursued his post-graduate education at the University of Connecticut, University of Cincinnati and Columbia University. While serving in the United States Army (1954-1956) at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, he taught physics and mathematics to medical officers of the Fourth Army Medical Training Center. Concurrently, he served the Southwest Research Institute on a consultant basis. He worked on the Mercury Space Program projects as staff consultant with the Bendix Corporation. At the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati General Hospital, he taught post-doctoral medical physics, conducted cancer research, and was among the first to use hyperbaric oxygen treatment in cancer patients. He was a pioneer in the field of radiation and nuclear medicine, advancing the practice of cancer therapy at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in NYC. He was an Officer of the University, Associate in Physics at Columbia and Director of the Department of Oncological Physics. He co-authored two medical textbooks and presented and published numerous medical papers. He was a Charter Member of the Health Physics Society and a member of the American Association of Physics in Medicine. In his retirement years, he continued his work in his 'personal laboratory,' his Kentucky farm. Charles is survived by his wife of more than 55 years, Rebecca Clark Herbert (formerly of Maysville, KY), his daughters Sherra Stewart-Rego (Mark) of Milford, CT and Gera Jones (Charles) of Muses Mill, KY, his grandsons Ian Stewart (Colleen) of Milford, CT and Ryan Drake of Muses Mill, KY, and his newly born great-grandson Conor Patrick Stewart. He is also survived by a special nephew, Roger Clark and niece, Leona Watson. His family would like to thank Robert Drake and the other first responders of the Muses Mill Fire Department and the staff of Saint Claire Regional Medical Center, especially the ER and ICU doctors and nurses, for their kind, patient, expert care. A very special thanks to Shelby Fannin, an ever-present friend in need, and to Sister Jeanne Francis for her much appreciated support to our family. At Charles' request, funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date. Charles entered life on the first day of summer and departed on the last day of summer.
