Obituary

Dr. Charles Henry Elliott, Jr., age 84, of Clearfield, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at his residence. Born January 19, 1926, in Syracuse, New York, he was the son of the late Charles H. Elliott, Sr., and Dr. Marjorie Fox Reeve Elliott. Charles is survived by his wife of 30 years, Madge A. Thomas Elliott, whom he wed November 16, 1980; four children, Reesha Grunder of Tallahassee, Florida, Eric Elliott and wife Lisa of Ramsey New Jersey, Laura Elliott of Boston, Massachusetts, and Vanessa Elliott of Blooming Grove, New York; three stepchildren, Susie Taylor and husband Steve of Morehead, Kentucky, Jay Day and his wife Teresa of Lexington, Kentucky, Pam Dillon and her husband David of Clearfield, Kentucky; twelve grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Charles was an educated man passing on his love for learning to all who came in contact with him. He obtained his education from Cornell University at Ithaca in the State of New York, receiving a Bachelor of Science, June 13, 1949, Master of Arts, January 31, 1951, and a Doctor of Philosophy September 20, 1960. Charles performed in the opera at Radio City Music Hall in New York City for eight years and was a Navy veteran of WW II. He spent most of his years as a college professor teaching Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology, and Race and Ethnicity. He taught at many colleges including Fordham University in New York City, Cornell University in Ithaca, University of Gothenburg Sweden, Syracuse University, Morehead State University, and Tampa College in Florida, where he retired. Charles- passion for teaching continued as he worked as a ski instructor and worked with a literacy program in St. Petersburg, Florida. Charles was a devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He lived life to the fullest and took what most people would find trivial moments and turned them into important life lessons; he showered family with words of encouragement and planted seeds of wisdom as one of his most notable gifts. He and his wife Madge traveled the globe and left no stone unturned as he treated every day as an opportunity to grow mentally, physically, and spiritually. He loved golf, tennis, music, poetry, philosophy, nature, a magnificent sunrise with an ocean view topped off with a good cup of coffee. Charles understood the value of relationships and loved his family but above all he loved life and he lived it beautifully. Visitation is from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2010, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 5 p.m. with the Rev. Allan Hutchinson officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First Church of God, 564 Sunset Lane, Morehead, KY 40351 Visitation: Saturday, August 14, 2010, 3 - 5 p.m. Funeral: Saturday, August 14, 2010, at 5 p.m.
