Charles Joseph Crail, age 85, of Lyons Avenue, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, October 6, 2007, at the Life Care Center in Morehead. Born April 2, 1922, in Dayton, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Charles and Catherine Leurck Crail. He is survived by his wife of almost 48 years, Elizabeth Marie Cooper Crail, whom he wed on October 10, 1959; one son: Stephen Joseph and Donna Crail of Morehead; six daughters: Mary Catherine and Ray Thomson of Potomac, Illinois; Beth Scott of Morehead, Kentucky; Nancy and Sam Estes of Morehead, Kentucky; Julie and Ted Beckmann of Russell Springs, Kentucky; Theresa and Chuck Davis of Morehead, Kentucky; and Victoria and Fred Cooper of Morehead, Kentucky; and three sisters: Dorothy Grothaus of Ft. Thomas, Kentucky; Catherine Rust of Melbourne, Kentucky; and Beth McClurg of Newport, Kentucky. Other survivors include seventeen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Edwin Crail; one sister, Mary Alwell; his first wife, Elenor Altman Crail; and one son, Bernard Crail. Mr. Crail served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and retired as the public affairs officer with the U. S. Forest Service after a career of 37 - years. A graduate of Newport High School and Purdue University, his career in forestry began in Alaska and took him to Virginia and several locations in Kentucky, including Ft. Knox, Elizabethtown and Winchester. He assisted in the planning of the recreational facilities at Cave Run Lake and developed programs in Daniel Boone National Forest. He was an Eagle Scout, a volunteer with 4-H Programs, the American Red Cross, and a GED tutor. He helped restore Tater Knob Tower and was a director of the Morehead Memorial Tree Walk. He was a member of Jesus Our Savior Catholic Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2007, at Northcutt and Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jay Von Handorf and Deacon Bill Buelterman officiating. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery with full military rites conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Pallbearers will be grandsons Anthony Donovan, David Estes, Bernie McCarty, Josh Davis, Stevie Crail, and Hank Beckmann. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Monday, October 8, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to St. Claire Hospice, 222 Medical Circle, Morehead, KY 40351. Visitation: Monday, October 8, 2007, after 5 p.m. Funeral: Tuesday, October 9, 2007, at 1 p.m. Interment: Brown Cemetery
