Obituary

Catherine Mabel McDavid Thacker Chaffins' earthly life of 90 years came to a peaceful conclusion at her residence in Morehead, Kentucky, when the angels came to carry her home on May 26, 2018. Catherine was born on February 15, 1928, in Coxton, Harlan County, KY. She was the oldest daughter of George and Margie (Woods) McDavid. She was one of the 11 siblings from which she knew strong bonds and the love of family. Catherine worked at the Stumbo Memorial Hospital in Lackey, KY. Dr. Akers trained her for the LPN test which she passed to become one of the first LPNs in Eastern Kentucky. She later worked at McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital in McDowell, KY until she retired in 1976. Catherine was a member of Drift Pentecostal Church in Drift, KY and the Freewill Baptist Church in Lackey, KY. Catherine was preceded in death by her beloved first husband, Clyde Thacker, and her second husband, Hiatt Chaffins; grandmother, Ollie (Wells) Woods; her father and mother, George and Margie (Woods) McDavid; her brothers, Howard, Olaf, Donald "Donnie," and Frederick "Bossy" McDavid; her sisters, Lorraine McDavid, Irma Jean Belcher, and Betty Salyers; son, Harry Thacker; and grandchild, Bryan Kelly Thacker. Survivors include: one daughter, Sharon Rose Calhoun, Jackson, KY; four sons: Reggie and wife Kelly Thacker of Louisville, Derek and wife Dr. Caren Daniels Thacker, Shawn and wife Kate Thacker, Todd and wife Marsha Thacker, all of Morehead; three sisters: Bearretta McCoy of Bristol, Virginia, Phyllis Wade and Beverly Wright, both of Springfield, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Kristie Dillon, adopted daughter/special friend, came in to Catherine's life at a significant time and greatly impacted the quality of Catherine's life. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Catherine's excellent caregivers, Patty Blevins, Lavonne Kinder, and Sherry Doyle. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 29, 2018, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead, KY. Additional visitation will be Wednesday, May 30, 2018, beginning at 3 p.m. followed by a church service at Drift Pentecostal Church (Floyd County), Route 1101, Shannon Drive, Drift, KY. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the Drift Pentecostal Church with Brother Ted Shannon officiating. Burial will follow at the Conley Cemetery in Lackey in Knott County, KY. Pallbearers: Robert Thacker, Kevin Thacker, George Thacker, Jonathon Thacker, Tyler Thacker, Braiden Thacker, McKay Thacker, Bryan Thacker, Chase Thacker, Eric Embry and Wyatt Helson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to the National Alzheimer's Association. Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead is caring for arrangements.
