Obituary

Carolyn P. Stephens Flatt, age 74, of Parkersburg, WV, formerly of Morehead, KY, passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at St. Joseph Hospital in Parkersburg. Born April 7, 1936, in Parkersburg, WV, she was the daughter of Charles R. and Zelpha White Stephens. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Cecil Stephens. Carolyn is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dr. Don Flatt; two children, Missy Spivy and her husband Joe of Vienna, WV and David Flatt and his wife Kathy of Sandy Hook, KY; 11 grandchildren, Amanda (Anthony) Wireman, Kelly Flatt, Leah (Cory) Delbaugh, David Flatt, Cameron Flatt, J. T. Spivy, Bronson Flatt, Samuel Flatt, Anna Carolyn Spivy, Shanna (Garrick) Bradley, and Coty Stephens; and 7 great grandchildren, Alexis Wireman, Alan Wireman, Brayden Moore, Brody Moore, Caden Flatt, Eden Flatt, and Samuel Flatt. Other survivors include two sisters, Frances Stephens of Vienna, WV and Emeline Waring and husband Frank of Melbourne, FL; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews; other devoted family and friends. Carolyn graduated from Parkersburg (WV) High School, attended Freed-Hardeman College and earned both a bachelor-s and master-s degree from Morehead State University. A teacher for more than thirty years, she taught at Flemingsburg Elementary School in Flemingsburg, KY, and Lincoln Elementary School in Parkersburg, WV, and retired as Director of the Personal Development Institute (PDI) at Morehead State University after 29 years of service. Carolyn, a devout Christian, was a member of Grand Central Church of Christ in Vienna, WV. For many years, she was an inspirational speaker for various women-s groups throughout the region. Carolyn was loved by all who knew her. Always faithful, always hopeful, she embraced each day with a smile. Those who knew her and witnessed her unwavering faith and courage in the face of adversity were challenged to follow her example as she followed Christ. She found joy in her family, many friends, the children who were drawn to her warmth and the love of her furry companion, Bitsy. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, November 12, 2010, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Joe Spivy, Bob Stephens, and Barrett Coffman officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Morehead. Pallbearers: David Flatt, Bronson Flatt, J. T. Spivy, Anthony Wireman, Coty Stephens, and Cory Delbaugh. Honorary Pallbearers: Jimmy Stephens, Stephen Waring, Randy Stephens, Tim Waring, Bill Flatt, Leamon Flatt, Kenneth Flatt, Jimmy Anderson, Corey Crabtree, Frank Waring, Clarence Jones, Jim Osborne, Glenn McCarty, Russ Day, Richard Long, and Ollie Barker. Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday, November 11, 2010, and any time prior to the service on Friday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351 In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the International Myleoma Foundation or the Carolyn Flatt Scholarship funds at Morehead State University, Ohio Valley University, or Freed-Hardeman University. Visitation: Thursday, November 11, 2010, after 6 p.m. Funeral: Friday, November 12, 2010, at 2 p.m. Interment: Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens
