Obituary

Carol Ann Vencill (nee. Grote), 70, of Ft. Thomas, KY and formerly of Morehead, KY, passed away on May 19, 2024, in her home.

The oldest of four, Carol grew up in Morehead, Kentucky, and attended University Breckinridge School. She loved performing arts, speech and drama, was runner up Junior Miss Kentucky in 1968 and graduated high school at the young age of 16.  Carol received her BA from University of Michigan (still a Wolverines fan, but always a Kentucky fan) and her nursing degree from Eastern Kentucky University. She resided in Spokane, Woodenville, and Seattle, Washington, from 1978 - 2000, where her children were born. She returned to Kentucky in 2000, living in Morehead and Lexington, before moving to Ft. Thomas, Kentucky, in 2022, to be closer to family.  A caregiver by nature, Carol worked as a labor and delivery nurse, lending her ear and comfort to patients, family, and friends who confided in, trusted, and valued her perspective.  A wanderlust by heart, Carol loved to travel with her family, and take her dog McGee swimming.  The world's best baker, she enjoyed making things for friends and family.  The highlight of Carol's life recently was her "Gram's babies," who loved her back so much.  Our Mom, Wife, Gram, Aunt, Friend, Matriarch, and Crown Jewel will be greatly missed.

Carol was preceded in death by parents, Charles Nelson and Wilma Ellen Grote; brother, Steven Grote. Carol is survived by her loving husband, Glenn "Skip" Vencill; daughter, Jamie (Joseph) Ireland; son, Matthew (Meredith) Jones; sister, Jan (David) Adam; brother, Mark (Kyriacos Kyriacou) Grote and 4 grandchildren, Wynne (12), Cora (9), Luca (8) and Lexi (2).

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 9, 2024, from 2-6 p.m. at Sawstone Brewing Co. in Morehead, Kentucky. Memorial contributions may be made to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (pancan.org) and The Nest – Center for Women, Children, and Families (thenestlexington.org).
