Billy "Joe"
Eldridge
Dec 21, 1944 — Jul 8, 2023
Billy "Joe" Eldridge, age 78, of Lower Licking Road, Morehead, passed peacefully at his residence surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, July 8, 2023, after an extended illness.
Born December 21, 1944, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Simon and Goldie Hicks Eldridge. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Betty Sloan Eldridge, and his brothers, Raymond Rogers Eldridge, Simon Eldridge Jr., and Teddy Eldridge.
Joe's memory will be cherished by his daughter, Carmen Eldridge Swim; son-in-law Phillip; and grandchildren, Olivia Swim and Graham Swim. He is also survived by his dear sister, Audra Eldridge Black, and numerous nieces and nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
A devoted husband, father, and Papaw, Joe's life centered around his home and family. He received great joy in meeting the needs of his family and helping others as well. In addition to retiring from the Morehead Housing Authority, he was a lifelong farmer and skilled handyman. He also served in the United States Army right out of high school during the Vietnam War. His post-retirement life was spent fishing, hunting, gardening, and being available to his grandchildren.
In May of 2015, Joe gave his life to Christ and was baptized in the Licking River near the home he loved so much. Joe was able to return to his home before passing because of the exceptional care and support he received from Northpoint Lexington Healthcare Center, The VA Hospital in Lexington, St. Claire Hospice of Morehead, and neighbor Ann Logan. He will be greatly missed.
A celebration of life will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals with the Rev. Nancy Gowler officiating. Burial will follow in the Swim Cemetery on Ellington-Swim Cemetery Road in Rowan County with full military honors presented by Morehead American Legion Post 126.
Pallbearers: Mark Eldridge, Randy Eldridge, Elwood Caudill Jr., Darrell Glover, Tony Glover and Steve Strunk.
Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Gateway Homeless Coalition, Inc., Special Needs Camp of Kentucky, Inc, or St. Claire Hospice.
