Rev. Bernard 'Bernie' Lovely, Sr., age 88, of Fleetwood Lane, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Monday, January 6, 2014, at his residence. Born July 15, 1925, in Montgomery County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Garner and Beulah Bates Lovely. Bernie is survived by his wife of 66 years, Essie McKenzie Lovely, whom he married November 22, 1947; two sons, Bernard F. Jr. (Sylvia Leach) Lovely of Lexington, Kentucky, Larry V. (Patricia L. Sargent) Lovely of Morehead, Kentucky; two daughters, Sandra Lovely (John) Carey of Lexington, Kentucky, and Lisa Gail Lovely of Morehead, Kentucky; 11 grandchildren, Ross, David, Eric, Lance, Holly, Caitlin, James, Madeline, Sara, Seth, and Samuel; 11 great grandchildren, Mara, Alisa, Abigail, Connor, Aidan, Noah, Haley, Simon, Mary, Jacob, and Lucas; and one sister, Juanita Abner of Trenton, Ohio. He served as a U.S. Army Staff Sergeant in the Philippines during World War II and gave his life to God on Palm Sunday in 1959 at the Grand Avenue Church of God in Middletown, Ohio. Rev. Lovely became a Church of God minister in 1964 serving churches in Harlan, Ashland, and Morehead, Kentucky; Gratis and Bloomingdale, Ohio; Toccoa, Georgia; and Homestead, Florida. In addition to his work in the ministry, Bernie had been an insurance agent for Western Southern Insurance; the manager of Ross Motors Company, Bernie's Auto Sales, and Meadow Auto Sales, all in Middletown, Ohio, and Harlan Motor Company in Harlan, Kentucky; and the owner of Bernie and Essie's Antiques in Farmers, Kentucky. He was also a former Harlan City Council member and Rowan County Magistrate. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, January 10, 2014, at the Morehead First Church of God with the Rev. Lowell Rice, Rev. Rodney Williams, Rev. Allan Hutchinson, and Rev. Mike Pennington officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with military honors by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Pallbearers will be Ross Lovely, David Lovely, Eric Lovely, Lance Lovely, Seth Richardson, Samuel Hargis, and James Carey. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, January 9, 2014, at the Morehead First Church of God, 576 Sunset Drive.
