Barbara Collett Fossett, age 70, of Beechwood Lane, Morehead, Kentucky, a community volunteer and wife of Dr. Thomas Fossett, passed away Thursday, November 6, 2008, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center. Born October 5, 1938, in Bell County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Elisha and Lina Green Collett. In addition to her husband Tom, Barbara is survived by one son, Thomas Reed Fossett of Morehead, Kentucky; two daughters, Susan Collett Layne of Sardinia, Ohio, and Janet Elizabeth Helvey of Morehead, Kentucky; two sisters, Alice Faye Hurt of Naples, Florida, and Joyce Alexander of St. Petersburg, Florida; and 12 grandchildren, Matthew, Ruth, Colleen, Katherine, Sarah, Ross, Devin, Nancy, Hannah, Rebekah, Elena, and Caleb. Barbara was a graduate of Lafayette High School and Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Lexington, Kentucky. She had also been a nursing instructor and orthopedic nurse at Good Samaritan and an ER nurse at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. She was volunteer coordinator and taught classes for teen volunteers at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. A well-known community volunteer, Barbara was a Girl Scout Leader for many years. She was also especially committed to charitable causes of the Kentucky Federation of Women-s Clubs (KFWC). Twice Barbara was President of the Morehead Woman-s Club, and in 2001 was named an honorary member of the club. She served as Governor of the KFWC Eighth District and was President of the Kentucky Federation of Women-s Club in 2002 and 2003. She also served on the Board of Directors for the General Federal of Women-s Clubs. Barbara was the only member of the Morehead Woman-s Club to serve as state president, other than Mrs. Adron (Mignon) Doran. While President of KFWC, Barbara started -Quarters for Headquarters- a fund to refurnish the KFWC Home in Louisville, KY. She truly loved the woman-s club and called all the volunteers -ladybugs.- To this day, volunteers are given a little ladybug when they volunteer! A faithful member of the Morehead United Methodist Church, Barbara served on various committees and was a former Sunday School teacher. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at the Morehead United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bruce Nettleton and Dr. Jack Ellis officiating. Active Pallbearers: Sammy Alexander, Larry Besant, Terry Collett, Dana Greenfield, Ron Hurt, Charles Hutchinson, Sr., Scott Johnson, and Tim Miller. Honorary Pallbearers: George Alfrey, Dr. Shelley Bennett, Dr. Ann Colbert, Dr. Allen Lim, Dr. Steve Mitchell, Dr. Tom Newcomb, Dr. Mary Phillips, Dr. Cynthia Schneider, Dr. Ed Scott, Dr. Pat Serey, and Dr. David Victor. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Monday, November 10, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the United Methodist Church Building Fund, 227 West Main Street, Morehead, KY 40351 or Kentucky Federation of Women-s Clubs, 1228 Cherokee Road, Louisville, KY 40204. Visitation: Monday, November 10, 2008, after 5 p.m. Funeral: Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at 1 p.m. Interment: Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens
