Obituary

Mrs. Avonelle W. Dyer, 89, of Morehead, went to be with the Lord on January 10, 2011, at St. Joseph-Mt. Sterling. Born November 16, 1921, at Holler Poplar, KY, she was the daughter of the late Claude Whitt and Mary Claudia Lykins Whitt. Avonelle was a member of the first graduating class of Morgan County High School in 1937. During World War II, she served as a -Rosie the Riviter- at the Willow Run Aircraft Factory in Ypsilanti, Michigan. She was a graduate of Morehead Teacher-s College, receiving her bachelor-s degree in 1939 and her master-s in 1958. She enjoyed a career in education, serving as a grade school teacher in the Morgan County Schools, then serving as the first Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction for Morgan County Schools until her retirement in 1976. Other accomplishments she attained throughout her life include many 4-H advisor recognitions as well as serving as a Girl Scout leader and cookie chairman for Morgan County. Additionally, she was a 50-year plus member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Epsilon Chapter and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. She enjoyed knitting and during her retirement she provided many sweaters for the Guideposts Knit for Kids. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie Dyer. She is survived by a daughter, Claudette Dyer Watts and her husband, Vinson Alan Watts, Jr., of Morehead; two grandsons, Tripp Watts and his wife Chelsea of Morehead, and Todd Watts and his wife Ashley of Flemingsburg; and one great-grandson, Nathan. Other survivors include her sister, Pauline Wingo of Raceland, and three beloved nephews, Cleve Wingo and his wife Linda of Lexington, Paul David Wingo and his wife Dorothea of Versailles, and Greg Wingo and his wife Becky of Manchester. Mrs. Dyer was a member of the Morehead United Methodist Church and formerly a member of the West Liberty United Methodist Church. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, January 14, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Rev. Drew McNeill officiating. Burial will follow in the New Alfrey Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Steve Barker, Steve Perkins, Steve O-Connor, Josh Lawson, Joel Lawson, and Roger Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be the children of Cecil and Virgie Wilson. In lieu of flowers, donations suggested to Morehead United Methodist Church, 227 W. Main Street, Morehead, KY 40351 or Blue Grass Council, Boy Scouts of America, 3445 Richmond Road, Lexington, KY 40509. Visitation: Thursday, January 13, 2011, after 5 p.m. Funeral: Friday, January 14, 2011, at 1 p.m. Interment: ew Alfrey Cemetery
