Obituary

Arvetta Dorcas Plank Dean, age 82, of US 60 East, Morehead, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2015, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. Born July 15, 1932, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Allie and Eliza Lovelace Plank. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Georgia Alene Plank Carter; six brothers, Harold, Marvin, Vernon, Wendell, Darrell, and Ralph Plank; and two infant siblings. Arvetta is survived by her husband of 60 years, Lloyd Dean; five sisters, Vada Estep of Morehead, Joyce Riddle and Phyllis Rogers, both of Fairmont, Indiana, Shirley Davis of Muncie, Indiana, and Ona Bennett of Marion, Indiana; one brother, Curtis Plank of Knoxville, Tennessee; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Arvetta and Lloyd were united in marriage October 2, 1954, in Morehead. Lloyd was serving in the Air Force and they moved to Riverside, California, for three years before returning home in 1957 for Lloyd to complete his bachelor's degree at Morehead State University. In 1959, Lloyd was employed as a teacher in Felicity, Ohio, and Arvetta was secretary to the elementary school principal. Following teaching opportunities, they moved to Grayson in 1963 and to Hayes Crossing in 1970, where they involved themselves in school, church, and community. Prior to her marriage, Arvetta was employed at Cowden's for six years and the sewing factory in Olive Hill for two years. When they last returned to Rowan County, she became a well-known babysitter. Throughout her career, she lovingly cared for more than 300 children, who enjoyed visiting with her as adults. In addition, Arvetta was a constant helpmate to her husband, who was a full-time teacher and counselor in the Rowan County schools and served as pastor at Morehead United Pentecostal Church for 43 years. Arvetta was a Sunday school teacher and song leader for 43 years, Sunday school secretary for more than 30 years and former East Kentucky Ladies Auxiliary President. Through the church, she volunteered 46 years with seniors at the Life Care in Morehead and the Nursing and Rehabilitation center in West Liberty. For many years, she was also a volunteer cook at the church's youth camp. A supporter of community activities, she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Hayes Crossing-Haldeman Fire Department for 17 years. In her spare time, Arvetta enjoyed gardening, making quilts, and visiting with family and friends. She will be sadly missed. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2015, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brothers Michael Anderson, Ray McIntosh, Anthony Keaton, and Gerald Vittitow officiating. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery. Pallbearers: Jerry Bowen, Austin Knipp, Terry Knipp, Mitch Perry, Roy White, Mike Patrick. Honorary pallbearers: All members of Hayes Crossing-Haldeman Fire Department, Ladies Auxiliary, and Junior Firemen. Visitation is 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2015, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Claire Hospice, 222 Medical Circle, Morehead, KY 40351 Visitation: Friday, January 30, 2015, 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Funeral: Saturday, January 31, 2015, at 2 p.m. Interment: Brown Cemetery
