Obituary

Arthur Cox, age 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 13, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born on September 4, 1935, in Elliott County to the late James Edward and Mary Conn Cox. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Barbara Fultz Cox; his infant son, Gregory Allen Cox; and his granddaughter, Erin Nicole Whittaker. Arthur was also preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters:  Arlen Cox, Orville Cox, Elijah Cox, Johnny Cox, Arminta Binion, Martha Feril Holbrook, Olive Parker, Hazel Brammer, and Golda Richardson.

Arthur is survived by three daughters, Sheila Wooley and husband Jim of Mount Sterling; Teresa Stacy and husband Rocky of Morehead, and Melissa Brooks and husband Greg of Hillsboro; five grandchildren, Matthew Whittaker, Kristen Watson and husband Patrick, Jonathan Stacy and wife Ally, Jayla Lillard and Braeden Lillard; and one great grandchild, Avery Stacy. Arthur was excited for the arrival of his second great grandchild, expected in March.

Additional survivors include one sister, Eunice Dubuisson of Middletown, Pennsylvania; four sisters-in-law, Evelyn Cox of Glasgow, West Virginia, Virginia Svencner and husband Frank of Crown Point, Indiana, Loretta Smedley and husband Harold, and Brenda Bowman and husband Carlos, all of Clearfield, Kentucky. He also leaves behind a close friend and neighbor, Shorty Boyd, as well as several nieces and nephews, friends, and a loving church family that will miss him dearly.

Arthur was a dedicated worker and held various jobs throughout his life. He was a veteran of the United States Army and an employee of Williams Nickell Oil Company and Flav-O-Rich Dairies.  In later years, he worked as a security guard at Family Dollar Distribution Center where he was affectionately known as "Papaw." Arthur was a devoted family man and always worked hard to provide a good life for his wife and children.  He was small in stature, but he had a big personality with a kind and gentle spirit and a strong sense of humor.  He enjoyed gardening, tinkering, and was always ready to play a hand of rummy, confident he would win.  He especially loved spending time with his family and beloved dogs, Peppy and Molly.

Arthur was a Godly man. He was a long-time Christian and member of Bairtown Church of God. His love for Jesus was demonstrated through every aspect of his life, especially his marriage.  He married the love of his life, Barbara, on May 25, 1957, and devoted himself to her for 63 years. Although he will be greatly missed, family and friends find comfort knowing that he lived a long, happy life and is now home in Heaven.
