Obituary

Amanda Frances Stevens Kendall, age 96, of U.S. 60 East, Morehead, the oldest World War II veteran in Rowan County, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 27, 2014, at the Thompson Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore. Frances was born December 10, 1917, in Rowan County, a daughter of the late Charles and Myrtle Wilson Stevens. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Johnson and Reatha Watson; one brother, Leonard Stevens, who was killed in World War II; and one granddaughter, Jennifer Kendall. Her devoted husband of 63 years, Gordon Kendall, preceded her in death on September 3, 2007. In 1943, at the age of 26, Frances joined the Army and was honorably discharged on December 9, 1945. She received the Women's Army Corps Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. During her military service, she met her husband Gordon, who was serving as a gunner with the British Army, and they wed in Brooklyn, New York, on August 17, 1944. Frances was a loving homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother. She attended the Rodburn Church of God. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Kathie Kendall of Waleska, Georgia, and Richard and Linda Kendall of Russell; one sister, Goldia Martt of Danville; 7 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 2014, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brother Marty Simpson and Brother Harry Gay officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with full military honors presented by Morehead American Legion Post 126. Pallbearers will be Rick Kendall, Mark Kendall, Stanley Messer, Larry Joe Stevens, Rick Messer, and Scott Foster. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 2014, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Galilean Home Ministries, P. O.
