Allen Douglas
"Styx" Hicks
Dec 8, 1962 — May 31, 2026
Allen Douglas "Styx" Hicks, age 63, of Sharkey Road, Morehead, passed to his Heavenly home on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at UK-St. Claire HealthCare in Morehead following an extended illness.
Born December 8, 1962, in Maysville, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Scottie B. Hicks and Gardenia "Deanie" Snedegar Hicks. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Todd Stewart.
Styx leaves behind a loving family, including his two special children, Adam Hicks (Autumn) of Morehead and Kayla Hicks Miracle (Jared) of Mt. Sterling; three cherished grandchildren, Griffin Miracle, Oliver Hicks, and Ava Hicks; his second mom, Susan "Cookie" Richards Hicks of Owingsville; two brothers, Rodney Hicks of Winchester and Tim Utterback (Judy Goldie) of Owingsville; and three sisters, Janet Stewart of Morehead, Karen Curtis (Charles) of Grange City, and Susan Oldfield of Owingsville.
He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Tyler Stewart, Kristina Curtis, Ryan, Nathan, and Megan Utterback, Marleigh Hudson, and Jefferson Oldfield; several great-nieces and great-nephews; his beloved Bluegrass music family; and countless friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
Styx dedicated more than three decades of service to the United States Postal Service. He began his postal career at Morehead State University and later served as a mail carrier in Morehead. Through hard work and dedication, he advanced to clerk and then into management, serving in several post offices throughout northeastern Kentucky, including Morehead, Clearfield, Olympia, and Owingsville. He retired in 2024 as Postmaster of Clay City, leaving behind a legacy of faithful service, strong leadership, and lasting friendships among his postal family.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Owingsville Ward. Styx was a member of Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654 and also attended Phelps Lodge No. 482. He was a Kentucky Colonel and a former member of the Rowan County Rescue Squad.
Known far and wide for his love of Bluegrass music, Styx traveled many miles supporting musicians and attending festivals, shows, and gatherings. He enjoyed preserving special moments by capturing unique performances and sharing them with others. To those who knew him, he was more than a fan—he was a fixture of the Bluegrass community and a friend to all.
Styx had a remarkable gift for making every person he met feel important. With his contagious smile, kind heart, and cheerful spirit, he could brighten any room. He was a master storyteller whose humor and quick wit left people laughing long after the conversation ended. His familiar phrase, "Why wouldn't ya?" became just one of the many memories his friends and family will forever treasure.
He was also an avid UK basketball fan, a passionate fisherman who enjoyed a good fish fry, a cold Ale-8, and spending time with those he loved. Above all else, Styx cherished his family and the relationships he built throughout his life.
Though there will now be an empty chair among the Bluegrass music gatherings he loved so dearly, Allen "Styx" Hicks leaves behind a legacy of friendship, kindness, faith, and music that will endure for generations. His impact on the lives of others cannot be measured, and his memory will continue to be shared wherever Bluegrass music is played and stories are told.
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."
Allen "Styx" Hicks will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.
