Williams
Apr 11, 1930 — Mar 19, 2013
Agnes Smith Williams, 82, of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away at St. Claire Regional Medical Center March 19, 2013, after a long illness. Born April 11, 1930, in Morehead, Rowan County, Kentucky, her parents were Rollie Estill Smith and Mayme Pearl Eldridge Smith. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Rollie Estill Smith, Jr. Agnes was married to James S. 'Jimmy' Williams, who passed away in 1969. Together they were the parents of three daughters, Debbie W. Caudill (Terry W. Caudill) of Louisville, Kentucky, Leslie L. Williams of Orlando, Florida, and Sandi W. Smith (Kevin G. Smith) of Ashland, Kentucky, who survive. She was also the very proud grandmother of Jamie B. Caudill (Lisa Monroe) and Amanda C. Talai (Daruyush James 'DJ') both from Louisville, Kentucky; and one great grandson, Aidan G. Caudill also of Louisville, KY. Two great grandchildren, Colin James and Isabel Christian Talai, preceded her in death in 2010. Also surviving are her dedicated caregivers Bonnie, Angie, Jeanette, and Tanner who have been by her side these many years. She leaves behind wonderful friends and neighbors and was always viewed by many of her daughters' friends, as their 'Other Mom.' Agnes was a prominent businesswoman in Morehead. After the death of her husband, Jimmy Williams, she assumed the position of President of Williams-Nickell Oil Company, a wholesale jobber of Shell products serving Rowan, Bath, Menifee, Morgan, Elliott, Fleming and Carter counties in Kentucky. The family owned business was founded in 1932 by Edward B. Williams and James Leslie Nickell, the father and grandfather of her husband. With no prior experience of running a business, Agnes combined her ability to learn, and with the help of the employees, she ran a successful company for seventeen years, until 1986 when the oil company was sold. Prior to managing the family business, Agnes was an active member of the Morehead First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) serving as a Deacon. Having three daughters she became involved with the Girl Scout in 1956 and was the District Chairman for the Girl Scout Council for 13 years. She served on the Board of Directors for the Wilderness Road Girl Scout Council. She was on the Board of Directors for the Rowan County United Way and was active in their fund-raising efforts. Agnes also served on the Zoning and Adjustment Board for the City of Morehead. As head of the garden department, she started the project of beautifying our old County Courthouse grounds and spent time and energy in securing help for the work that has been done. She was a Director of the People's Bank of Morehead, worked with the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Morehead Woman's Club, President of the League of Women Voters, and was always there to help her neighbors and newcomers to the Morehead area. Her husband Jim was a member of the Morehead Fire Department and Agnes worked with the Ladies Auxiliary serving the firefighters meals at her home and taking them refreshments when they were fighting a large fire. Agnes received the 'Woman of the Year Award' sponsored by the Morehead Lions Club in 1967 for her work with the Girl Scouts. She was honored with being 'Mayor for the Day' under the leadership of Larry Breeze in the 1990's. In addition to her many accomplishments and being an active member of her community, she was always concerned about making Morehead a better place to live. For many years, Agnes was referred to as 'The Mayor of Elizabeth Avenue' and was loved, admired and honored by her community.
