George Alfrey, Jr. Obituary

George Dewey Alfrey, Jr., age 88, of Alfrey Heights, Morehead, passed away Saturday, February 9, 2019, at his home.

Born October 13, 1930, in Morehead, he was the son of the late George D. and Mabel Amburgey Alfrey. His beloved wife of 59 years, Mary Yager Alfrey, whom he wed May 8, 1954, passed away September 25, 2013.

George is survived by his four children: Cindy (Larry) Amburgey, Todd Alfrey, Kathy Mazzotti and Jennifer (Dean) Hardin; seven grandchildren: Heather Amburgey Welte, Laura Amburgey Craig, Gretchen Hardin Lister, Anthony Mazzotti, Kristen Alfrey, Everett Alfrey and Kelly Alfrey; and nine great grandchildren: Jacob, Madison, Elijah, Grace, Wyatt, Silas, Ella, Josie and Ellie. Other survivors include sister-in-law, Jan Yager; nephews, James Yager and Steven Yager; and niece, Tish Yager Holland.

George Alfrey's lifelong love of flying began at age five. He reminisced frequently about his career in flying. As a teen, he was a crop duster. His next adventure took him into the U.S. Air Force, where he was among the first group of pilots to break the speed of sound. Following his Air Force service, he joined American Airlines in 1955. Flying was not only a career, but his lifelong passion and love. Upon retirement, he enjoyed his home in Morehead and traveled the country in his motorhome.

His second love was jazz music. He was a gifted jazz pianist-a gift he reserved for his family and close friends.

George's life was centered around flying, family, music, and community. He was so proud of and enjoyed his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. However, we couldn't complete our thoughts on Dad's life without expressing how deeply devoted he was to his wife Mary. She was his rock, his North Star, and his companion on the wonderful journey that was his life.

A Celebration of Life will be conducted 10 a.m. Thursday, February 14, 2019, at the Morehead United Methodist Church with the Rev. Aaron Mansfield officiating. Burial will follow in the Caudill Cemetery on West Main Street with full military honors presented by Morehead American Legion Post 126.

Pallbearers: Larry Amburgey, Dean Hardin, Anthony Mazzotti, Jacob Lindberg, Wyatt Welte, Elijah Stivers, and Silas Stivers.

Honorary pallbearers: Tom Fossett, Harvey Pennington, Jack Carter, and Daryll Austin Alfrey.
