Karen (Cassity) Ross

Karen Cassity Ross, age 79, of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at West Liberty Nursing and Rehab in West Liberty, Kentucky, after extended health difficulties.

Born December 2, 1944, in Lexington, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Cornette Cassity and Gracie B. Jones Cassity. 

In addition to her parents, Karen was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Ray Ross, who passed away February 16, 2015.

She is survived by two daughters, Shelley Sluss Taliaferro and Sheryl Ann Stern Ortega, both of Morehead; two stepsons, Raymond P. “Rocky” Ross, III of Grayson and Bradley Conrad Ross of Lexington; one brother, Jim Fred Cassity of Morehead; and one sister, Mary Morphew of Lexington.

Other survivors include four grandchildren, Marco Ortega (Whitney), Madison Ortega, Gabriel “Gabe” Taliaferro, and Faith Taliaferro; three great grandchildren, Sophia, Marco, and Stella, Ortega, as well as extended family and friends.

One of Karen’s favorite things to do besides spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids was reading. She was an avid reader, especially mysteries. She was also an active member of the retired teachers association. She also enjoyed hosting her husband Ray’s students over, except Ray did the cooking and she did the socializing. The two of them loved it when they were able to travel to New Orleans, their favorite city with excellent cuisine and exciting atmosphere. Karen was known for her storytelling and being chatty, as well as her sarcastic quick wit. 

A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. at Trinity Christian Fellowship, 537 West Main Street, Morehead, Kentucky, with Pastor Wade Muncy officiating.
