Obituary for Dr. Arvis Porter

Dr. Arvis Porter, age 87, of Morehead, a well-known general medical practicing physician for 40 years and a beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2017, at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born November 25, 1929, in Elliott County, he was a son of the late Nelson Porter and Opal DeHart Porter Fults. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Armott, Arlie, Oscar, and Clyde Porter; two sisters, Jolene Johnson and Sarah Skaggs; several stepsisters; and stepfather, Romie Fults.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Betty Griffith Porter, whom he wed December 29, 1962; one son, Dr. Roger Porter and his wife Jennifer of California, Kentucky, and three grandchildren, Brady, Mason, and Danica Thacker. Another son, Anthony Wayne Porter, passed away on March 12, 1983.

Other survivors include two brothers, Donald Porter of Morehead and Nelson Porter, Jr., of Elliott County; one sister, Lyda (Kenny) Skaggs of Elliott County; a stepsister, Virginia (“Doc” Roy) Murphy of Grayson; and several nieces and nephews.

Dr. Porter proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, earned his bachelor of science degree from the University of Kentucky and his medical degree from the University of Louisville, and spent his life loving God, his family, and the community. A humble, quiet person, Dr. Porter was passionate about treating his patients and always took the time to listen. He was known for not only hearing what said but also the unspoken words, which led to his reputation as an excellent diagnostician. An outdoor person who loved all of nature, Dr. Porter was a lifelong avid hunter, fisherman, and gardener. Many favorite times were spent in the woods or on the water with family and friends—especially with Chuck Meade, his best friend. Dr. Porter also thoroughly enjoyed gardening (but only after tending to Betty’s flowers first). Until this year, he grew a huge, meticulous garden, working daily to be able to share his harvest with family and friends. As a major “Wildcat fan,” he was always ready and eager to watch U.K. ballgames. Dr. Porter was a member of the First Baptist Church and lived his life by devout Christian principles. A dedicated family man, he adored and loved his wife of 54 years, Betty; their children, Tony and Roger; daughter-in-law Jennifer; grandchildren, Brady, Mason, and Danica; and his numerous dear nieces and nephews. To him, his family was his most precious legacy.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, July 6, 2017, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Dr. Don Mantooth officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with full military honors by Morehead American Legion Post 126.
